Write about a mess you've cleaned up.


A mess he surely was, or would have caused, but I don't know if what I did could be called cleaning.

William Grover was (as he was fond of repeating) an Agent of the Crown, an investigator for the English government that ruled over an increasingly restive Ireland in the late eighteen hundreds. A small man with fox-coloured hair under a shiny beaver hat, he held the native Irish in utter contempt, a sentiment the Gaels returned measure for measure. James Blondell, the local squire, had called him in to help locate his missing son, but Grover made it clear from his arrival that his main concern was rooting out nationalists who advocated Irish self-rule.

He was determined to put someone's neck in a noose ... locked to family )
